Cardiff, United Kingdom - August 3, 2018 /PressCable/ —

We are having an unusually sunny summer; the perfect weather to go sailing and that is precisely what Opin did when he found a blue yacht in his magic blue box. He took Grandad with him and they had a lovely adventure together. You can read all about their adventures in ‘Opin’s Blue Box’, a picture book for young children written by Audrey Fortescue, an author living in Cwmbran, South Wales. This is the first in a series, so you can also read more of the children’s adventures in ‘Flikity’s Red Box’ and ‘Rowa’s Yellow Box’.

Audrey Fortescue has now released the set of three in her children’s book series, ‘Opin’s Magic Boxes’. They are available from wordcatcher.com, Amazon, and other online retailers and are expected to become a big hit with children aged 3-5 years. More information on the series can be found here: https://www.wordcatcher.com/opins-magic-boxes-55-c.asp

Audrey Fortescue has authored three books. They were written with the aim of bringing to life Audrey’s own young relatives, and the names they call each other, Opin, Flikity, and Rowa. In the series of three books, their main focus is on adventures for young children. Readers will likely find a particular interest in how Opin, Flikity, and Rowa overcome different problems in each book. As the books are about real children and families, Audrey wanted the drawings to be as lifelike as possible and relate to the family. For example, the ski gear the family are wearing in Flikity’s Red Box is a true reflection of their own equipment at the time she wrote the book. In Rowa’s Yellow Box you can see a tartan border on Rowa’s t-shirt – Rowa and her family live in Scotland!

The books’ art was created by local artist, Sian Hanlon and the series, ‘Opin’s Magic Boxes’ is released by Onion Custard Kids, an imprint of Wordcatcher Publishing Group Ltd.

This is a review of Opin’s Magic Boxes by Educational Psychologist David Morgan: “Children deserve the opportunity to read enjoyable stories that do not talk down to them. This series of books provides that opportunity. The stories are enjoyable with a sense of anticipation which leaves young readers wanting to find out what happens next. They progress in reading difficulty from red to blue and then yellow but they can be read in any order. I would definitely provide these books to young children who are developing as readers.”

Audrey Fortescue was born into a small farming community in Northern Ireland. She trained as an occupational therapist in Edinburgh where she met her husband, Howard. They have three sons and three grandchildren. They have lived in England and the Netherlands and have now been living in Wales for 23 years. Audrey has always loved being with children. As a little girl her mum could always find her in the home of whichever neighbour had had a new baby. As an occupational therapist she specialised in paediatrics and has also worked as a teaching assistant in her local primary school.

When husband Howard was on a sailing experience with Blue Box Sailing in Hamble the idea of the Opin’s Magic Box series was born. Her grandchildren are called Austin, Felicity, and Rowen. Felicity couldn’t say Austin when he was born so she called him ‘Opin’, likewise Flikity and Rowa are the children’s baby names. In a recent interview, the author made a point of thanking her family, who were the inspiration for her stories for their part in the creation of the book.

Here is a review of Rowa’s Yellow Box from a reader in America: “My two year old daughter absolutely loves this book! She really enjoys talking about all the safari animals. We always finish up reading this book by trying to think of other things that are yellow. I love how this book makes use of so much varied and advanced vocabulary. It’s such a magical story, and really inspiring for children just starting out with imaginary play. I also appreciate the painted, realistic illustrations and the fact that the characters are actually human children and not anthropomorphic animals. It’s a firm favourite in our house!”
