Embracing traditions has been proven to be essential in keeping a culture’s identity. In interior design however, it can sometimes be challenging to decorate with more traditional items. Rasha Hamdan, founder of the online gallery Yislamoo– a curated collection of contemporary art prints and greeting cards inspired and infused with Arabian culture— proves that tradition and modern art can create a stunning combination that is sure to make any interior decorator proud.

Hamdan is a graphic artist who was driven to start Yislamoo out of love for her culture. Upon noticing an almost non-existent presence of Arabic language and art in greeting cards and art during her years as a design consultant, she decided to start the brand and design cards that not only appeal to contemporary sensibilities but is also respectful to tradition. The artist recalls starting the brand designing by herself and while now she still produces displayed works, other artists have started joining.

She shares how her culture– with the mixture of traditional values and modern influences– shaped her art style.

“I’m an Arab hybrid who was raised by TV and Middle Eastern traditions. It’s basically the story of many virtual nomads who are born in one geolocation but influenced by another. Just like every kid who grew up watching American sitcoms and listening to Rock music, while living amidst a traditional Middle Eastern culture; with time, everything melted like two primary colors mixed together to expand the color palette,” Hamdan shares.

Interior design, like fashion, changes by the season. New trends come up and ways that used to be the norm evolve and differ from one moment to the next. In recent years, traditional art has gotten its place back in the “What’s hot?” category of designers. More and more interior decorators are acknowledging the value of incorporating culture pieces into a home.

For more contemporary interior preferences, however, it can pose a challenge to add important cultural pieces, While sometimes adding really old, dull-looking art can make a room look better, more often than not, it does the complete opposite.

Fortunately for designers, graphic artists have started exploring a traditional art to modern art fusion, which usually if not always creates such a unique piece of art that not only stand out but also becomes an interesting conversation piece that can also serve as informative to other people unaware of the other’s culture.

The use of art prints like that of Yislamoo’s not only create a solemn space for the traditions to come alive in the home but also for wall arts and accent pieces to portray culture but also to tickle the interior taste buds and display a proud tradition that should never be forgotten.
