White House: Russia call for Ukraine referendum illegitimate

Jul 20, 2018

WASHINGTON — The White House said Friday it "is not considering supporting" a Vladimir-Putin-backed call for a referendum in eastern Ukraine in the aftermath of President Donald Trump's meeting with the Russian president. Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Anatoly Antonov, revealed Friday that the two leaders had discussed the possibility of a referendum in separatist-leaning eastern Ukraine during their Helsinki summit. National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis said agreements between Russia and the Ukrainian government for resolving the conflict in the Donbas region "do not include any option for referendum." He added any effort to organize a "so-called referendum" would...

WASHINGTON — The Latest on President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin (all times local): 12:10 p.m. The White House says the Trump administration "is not considering supporting" a Vladimir Putin-backed call for a referendum in the eastern Ukraine in the aftermath of President Donald Trump's meeting with the Russian president. The U.S. and Russia have been on opposing sides of the conflict in...

Japan's Abe: US auto tariffs will cost US jobs, harm economy

Jul 20, 2018

TOKYO — Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe warned the U.S. on Friday that higher tariffs on auto imports would backfire and harm not only America's jobs and economy but also devastate the global economy. Abe told a news conference marking the end of a Diet session that Japan's auto and auto parts industry has never threatened America's national security and it never will. Abe said he will keep explaining that to Trump. Trump has ordered the U.S. government to investigate if higher tariffs on foreign-made vehicles and auto parts are justified on national security grounds. Japan's auto industry has for...

A hairy issue: Sailors tell the US Navy, 'We want beards'

Jul 20, 2018

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Now that women in the Navy can wear ponytails, men want beards. The Navy said last week that servicewomen could sport ponytails, lock hairstyles, or ropelike strands, and wider hair buns, reversing a policy that long forbade females from letting their hair down. Servicemen immediately chimed in on social media, asking the Navy if they could grow beards. A sailor's Facebook post with a #WeWantBeards hashtag was shared thousands of times. Beards were banned in 1984. The Navy wanted professional-looking sailors who could wear firefighting masks and breathing apparatuses without interference. The Navy says that's still the...

Putin, Trump talked about a referendum for eastern Ukraine

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the possibility of a referendum in separatist-leaning eastern Ukraine during their Helsinki summit, Russia's ambassador to the U.S. said Friday. Ambassador Anatoly Antonov revealed the discussions amid confusion and concern in the U.S. about what the two world leaders actually agreed upon behind closed doors. "This issue (of a referendum) was discussed," he said, adding that Putin made "concrete proposals" to Trump on solutions for the four-year, Russian-backed insurgency in eastern Ukraine, which has killed more than 10,000 people. He did not elaborate on what Putin's solutions would be....
